What would cause a troy bilt lawn mower not to start? ›

You may need to replace the fuel filter, as it may be blocked. Next, make sure the engine is choked. If the engine still does not start, check the oil level. If it is low or empty, it could be a sign of internal engine damage.

If the lawn mower leaks gas the carburetor bowl gasket on the bottom of the carburetor might be dried out or missing. If the leak is coming from the bottom of the carburetor, try replacing the carburetor bowl gasket.

When the engine load increases, the crankshaft spins more slowly. This leads the flyweights to relax and the throttle to open back up. Governor springs hold the throttle in the desired maximum speed.

Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn't work, you might need a new fuel filter.

Use Carburetor Cleaner

Fortunately, you can generally do this without even taking the carburetor out of the engine.

The only way to clean a carburetor(s) without removal of parts is to add Sea Foam (a gum & varnish cleaner) to the fuel. [Pouring into a carburetor throat does not go into the carburetor.]

You can also use a carburetor cleaner such as Chevron Techron Concentrate Plus or Berryman Chem-Dip Carburetor Parts Cleaner. You can also use WD-40 on a carburetor – but specifically the Specialist Carb/Throttle Body & Parts Cleaner.

You do not need to start your engine at full throttle. You can lower to half throttle to start the engine. You can throttle down to low idle to turn off the engine. However,when running the engine with the blades engaged,you do need to have the engine at full throttle.

Pull the throttle into the choke position.

Move the throttle lever so it engages the choke. Depending on the mower, this is done by positioning the lever between the fast and slow settings or pulling it upwards past fast to a point sometimes indicated by a circle with a diagonal line through it.

There are several reasons why your lawn mower might start and then suddenly stop. The most common reasons include old fuel, a clogged air filter, or a carburettor that needs cleaning. Another possibility is a problem with the spark plug or the ignition system.
